Event description:

If your organisation is looking at bidding for public service contracts, either alone or as part of a consortium, and you feel you need to 'up your game' in terms of business practices, this two-day masterclass is for you.

About the course

With increasing opportunities for our sector to deliver public services, these practical masterclasses are designed to share the skills, tools and techniques used by experts in both the private and voluntary sector to win and deliver public service contracts. There will also be an emphasis on the requirements for delivering services as part of a supply chain headed by a commercial-sector provider.

The topics that will be covered during the masterclass are:

  • Economic and policy context
  • Understanding the new operating environment
  • Developing your offer
  • Managing bids
  • Understanding and managing risk
  • Negotiation
  • Governance and performance management
  • Summary, reflections and evaluation

Who runs it?
The masterclasses will be delivered by a partnership of voluntary-sector and private-sector trainers, including NCVO, NAVCA, Capita and Cofely.

The course is part funded by Cabinet Office and ESIF. The course fee is £50 for the two days including refreshments and lunch.

Who is it for?
CEOs, senior managers and trustees of charities and social enterprises that recognise the need to adopt more 'commercial' business practices. Participants should already be experienced in charity management, or operating projects or services.

Additional benefits:
NCVO will also:

  • provide online tools and resources to accompany the learning
  • offer suggestions for further development
  • link up all participants from across the country into an ongoing peer network.

"This two day masterclass was an eye opening experience for all in the room. Many frontline voluntary organisations understand that the sector in which they operate is changing - in terms of funding and resultantly how they deliver services to clients. But what these organisations are less clear on is the shape of the model they need to evolve into and crucially how they start that evolution.

"I felt this training gave an answer to that problem and, has since, helped our organisation to start the conversation about how we can evolve to meet the changing demands of our sector. By giving organisations, such as ours, access to and insight from a heavyweight of the commercial sector was incredibly valuable. Combining this insight with the knowledge and experience of our NCVO trainer, who framed discussions within the context of our sector, made the training very relevant to our needs.
